Established April 4, 2013, the Mark Landry Memorial Shipbuilders Scholarship honors Mark Landry (1963-2012) of Biloxi, Mississippi who served as the Workforce Development Director at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Representing his institution, Mr. Landry was a strong supporter of the Gulf States Shipbuilders Consortium (GSSC) and had a cooperative spirit and a true understanding of the value of partnerships as they related to workforce development.  His career in workforce development impacted the lives of countless students and adults.

Purpose

Eligibility

The Mark Landry Memorial Shipbuilders Scholarship assists motivated individuals seeking to learn new skills or upgrade existing skills in launching or advancing a career in the shipbuilding and repair industry. GSSC provides scholarships to selected recipients to be used toward tuition and fees at accredited colleges, universities, or approved training providers located in a Gulf Coast state (i.e., Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas).

To be considered for this scholarship, applicants must

  • Be a minimum of 18 years of age or older.

  • Be a citizen of the United States.

  • Reside in a Gulf Coast state.

  • Plan to attend or currently attend an educational institution or approved training provider located in a Gulf Coast state.

  • Have a high school diploma with a 2.5 overall grade point average or GED certificate.

  • Provide evidence of financial need.

  • Provide two letters of recommendation.

  • Be planning to enroll or enrolled in a course of study or training program that will, at a minimum, award a certification and prepare them to work or advance their careers in the shipbuilding and repair industry.

Selection

Scholarships are awarded through a competitive review process.  Applications will be judged using the following criteria:

  1. Completed Application Package

  2. GPA

  3. Evidence of Financial Need

  4. Letters of Recommendation

  5. Interest in a Career in Shipbuilding and Repair

Awards

The Mark Landry Memorial Shipbuilders Scholarship is funded with proceeds from GSSC’s annual Golf Classic and individual donations.  Each academic year, up to five eligible applicants are selected to receive a $1,000 scholarship for tuition and fees paid directly to each recipient’s selected academic institution or approved training provider by the Gulf States Shipbuilders Consortium.*

Deadline

Applications are accepted throughout the year.

*Scholarships are non-transferable. Unclaimed awards will be returned to GSSC for redistribution.
