GSSC PARTNERS WITH OLD DOMINION
GSSC Partners with Old Dominion to Deliver
Shipbuilding and
Repair Career Day Event to 400 Students.
Middle and high school students in Alabama and Mississippi
recently had the chance to make some waves of their own at a special
event showcasing careers in the shipbuilding and repair industry.
The career day event, held Jan. 17 at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community
College (MGCCC) in Gautier, MS, provided students with information
and hands-on activities designed to interest them in shipbuilding
careers. The Shipbuilding and Repair Career Day offered three main
activities including visiting working shipyards, talking to industry
professionals, and participating in hands-on activities simulating
shipyard work such as drilling, pipefitting and welding. GSSC partnered
with the Lean Institute at Old Dominion University, Northrop Grumman
Shipbuilding, the Alabama Technology Network, and MGCCC to organize
the event. The Career Day event was made possible through a grant
from the National Shipbuilding Research Program. In preparation
for the January event, GSSC partnered with Old Dominion to deliver
a workshop designed to expose middle and high school teachers and
counselors to career opportunities in the shipbuilding industry.
The event was held in September of 2007. At that event, representatives
from Atlantic Marine, Bollinger Shipyards, Northrop Grumman, and
Trinity Yachts shared their career experiences. Teachers also received
shipyard simulations that they could take back and share with their
classes.
