CORE LEADERSHIP TEAM FOR LIGHTHOUSE CAMPAIGN MEETS
The core leadership team of the Lighthouse Campaign--the funding drive to establish a national Maritime Workforce Development program for the maritime industry--traveled to Gainesville, FL to meet with NCCER to develop strategies for moving the campaign forward so that work could begin. The two-day meeting took place December 6-7, 2011, at NCCER. Following an extensive overview of NCCER's organizational structure and operations support by company executives, the group focused their discussions on the program and product development cycle for the project as well as the formation of a national Maritime Council to provide oversight for the initiative. The council will hold its organizational meeting in conjunction with GSSC's 2012 annual meeting scheduled March 27-28, 2012 in Mobile, Alabama.
The shipbuilding and repair industry is facing critical workforce issues--an aging workforce; a lack of technically skills workers; a lack of defined, standardized skill sets, curricula, and credentials; and increasing costs for recruiting, hiring, testing, and training workers. A formalized workforce development system has proven to increase productivity while decreasing turnover costs, absenteeism, injury, and rework in other industry sectors.
