Employers from shipyard and staffing agencies in the Gulf Coast region took applications and interviewed graduates from the first of three pilot Shipfitter Boot Camps at a Job Fair hosted by GSSC on October 28, 2011, and held at AIDT's Maritime Center in Mobile, Alabama. Eight of the 10 individuals invited to participate int he boot camp graduated. All graduates were offered employment by area shipyards. The purpose of the 11-week boot camp is to train entry-level shipfitters for successful careers in the maritime industry. According to Byron Dunn, GSSC president, "All of our trainees were drug and WorkKeys tested prior to being accepted into the program. The training program was designed by shipbuilders along the coast. To emphasize the importance of a strong work ethic, attendance, and punctuality, students were held to a high standard in terms of their behavior. They were also required to clock in and out every day, and a point system was used to track tardiness and attendance." The pilot boot camps also give GSSC an opportunity to test its newly developed standardized shipfitting curriculum and to make improvements before its final release to GSSC's membership in late 2012.
