GSSC PARTNERS TO DELIVER CAREER AWARENESS WORKSHOP
TO TEACHERS AND COUNSELORS
Recently, teachers and counselors from Alabama’s
and Mississippi’s middle and high schools in the Gulf Coast
region attended a workshop at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College
in Gautier, MS, to learn about career opportunities in the shipbuiding
and repair industry. The purpose of the event was to create awareness
of and enhance the image for this vital industry.
Alabama Technology
Network and the Gulf States Shipbuilders Consortium partnered with
Old Dominion University and Northrop Grumman Ship Systems, the event’s
sponsors. During the two-day event, teachers and counselors learned
about educational opportunities available through apprenticeship
training. In addition, industry representatives from Atlantic Marine
in Alabama, Bollinger Shipyards in Louisiana, and Northrop Grumman
Ship Systems and Trinity Yachts in Mississippi shared their career
experiences and answered questions from the group.
Teachers participating
in the event also received ship simulation kits that replicated
ship construction and design activities to take back to their classrooms.
Teachers received training on using the kits, which were developed
by Old Dominion University, during the event.
To expose students
to the industry, a Career Day Event will be held on January 17,
2008, at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in Gautier, MS.
This day-long event will attract 400-600 students from area middle
and high schools. The event will offer three main activities including
visiting working shipyards, talking to industry professionals, and
participating in hands-on activities simulating shipyard work like
drilling, pipe fitting, welding, etc. Parents, teachers and counselors
are also welcome to participate.
