GSSC LAUNCHES SECOND SHIPFITTER BOOT CAMP

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in Gulfport, Mississippi, is the training site for GSSC’s second Shipfitter Boot Camp, a pilot program designed to prepare individuals for entry-level employment as shipfitters. Eighteen of 28 candidates were invited to participate in the boot camp following pre-qualification activities that included drug testing, Workkeys® assessments, industry presentations, shipyard tours, and interviews.

GSSC’s Shipfitter Boot Camp is part of a larger project to develop standardized shipfitting curriculum with a portable skill certificate that is recognized by GSSC members along the Gulf Coast and can be used by high schools, community colleges, shipyards, as well as staffing providers to train individuals on core shipfitting skills.  Four years in development, the modularized, industry-driven curriculum required significant support from GSSC members and others including, but not limited to, AIDT, Alabama Technology Network, Austal USA, BAE Systems, Bollinger Shipyards, C & G Boatworks, Ingalls Shipbuilding, Signal International, Trinity Yachts, and VT Halter Marine, and WESCO. Funding was provided by the Alabama Technology Network through a federal Katrina grant from the Department of Commerce.

The 11-week boot camp is scheduled to run from November 14, 2011 through February 23, 2012.  At the conclusion of the boot camp, GSSC will host a graduation ceremony and job fair for successful completers of the program.

Graduates will be followed for three years to determine the long-term success of the program. As with the first boot camp, employers will also be asked to provide feedback related to the skill level of graduates in an effort to continually improve the program. One additional pilot is slated for delivery in 2012 in Louisiana.  Once the three boot camps are complete, plans are to release the curriculum for use by GSSC members.  For more information, contact Dr. Audrey Bandy, Alabama Technology Network, 205-943-4737 or Byron Dunn, GSSC President, 251-445-8998.
