GSSC COORDINATES MARITIME WORLD IN SAWDC'S WORLDS OF OPPORTUNITY CAREER EXPO
For the second year in a row, GSSC coordinated the Maritime World for SAWDC's Worlds of
Opportunity Career Expo at the Gulf States Fairgrounds in Mobile, Alabama, September 28-29, 2011. Now in its third year, the annual, hands-on event draws
thousands of eighth-grade students from public and private schools in
Southwest Alabama. Sponsored by the Southwest Alabama Workforce Development Council, the event is designed to expose students to career opportunities available through 12 industry sectors located in the region.
Facing a dwindline pipeline of technically-skilled workers, the event is an excellent opportunity to showcase the shipbuilding and repair industry and to expose students, teachers, guidance counselors, and parents to the industry and the different career paths it offers. It also serves as a way to establish a pipeline of future talent. This year's event drew 9,700 students, 970 teachers, counselors, and parent chaperones from 75 schools in eight counties.
The Maritime World consisted of hands-on booths and real-world simulations representing different jobs found on today’s shipyards (e.g., welding, electrical, shipfitting, machining, rigging, etc.). AIDT, ATN, Austal, BAE Systems, Ingalls Shipbuilding, Lincoln Electric, Miller, Signal International, Signal Ship Repair, WESCO Gas & Welding Supply were among the GSSC members assisting with the event.
